I have been involved in archery for a long time, initially as an archer shooting an English Longbow, which I did exclusively for nearly 10 years. I still shoot an English Longbow on occasion but nowadays I shoot a mixture of American Longbows, Recurves and Hybrids. I have never lost the love of traditional style shooting so I know nothing of sights, long rods, kissers, clickers and such like and I still shoot predominantly wood arrows. In the pursuit of my ultimate goal, which is to hit any target at any distance I have shot both in target and field and have employed gap shooting, string walking, face walking and a number of other techniques, my favourite however is instinctive which I feel embodies the true spirit of man becoming one with his bow. I have made bows and still enjoy making arrows. I operate an archery business which has me teaching and coaching both novice archers and those with many years experience, part of the business involves making custom arrows and strings and as such I am around bows and arrows all the time... I wouldn't have it any other way ! Because of what I do I have the opportunity to try out, use and experiment with a huge range of kit - hopefully you will find some of that experience interesting if not useful, of course one mans meat is another mans poison - Despite the fact that I am always happy to offer my opinion on any and all subjects, whether asked for or not this whole website isn't really about us at all, it's about the archery. I'm a field archer living in London, England. I have been doing archery on and off for 30 years, a lot more off than on. It was back in 2006 that I decided to be good at archery, we spent an awesome weekend shooting in France where I came dead last, it was my first competition, should have chosen something a little easier than the first FITA European 3D tournament, yet the experience was enough to push me to take archery much more seriously.
When I got back I started to do as much research as I could on all aspects of archery and started to buy as many different bows as I could get my hands on. 3 years and a hell of a lot of bows later I have found what I consider to be the best of the best. But I won't stop there I'll keep on looking until I can no longer draw back a bow....Gilf
It is with great please that we welcome Geoff Towers to the team as Historical Editor of the Magazine. Geoff is one of the foremost experts on the English Long and War Bow, but not only is his mind powerful his body is too and Geoff is capable of shooting the biggest longbows available.

It is with great pleasure, that as Historical Editor, I have been asked by Mr Steve Nicholson and Mr Andy Gilfrin, to give a brief resume of my career up to this present time. Without sounding 'too' far fetched, or indeed guilty of blowing one's own trumpet! ( a hanging offence as far as the English are concerned ) I consider myself to be one of the Worlds great authorities on the historical background and development of the English longbow. My range, like the bow is both broad and long, from the Mere Heath to the Mary Rose. The battles, the men who took part. The unique events that shaped our island history. When asked, there is nothing in this great land of ours on which I cannot be prevailed upon, to..... humbly, give an opinion.
Happily, I have in my possession, transcripts of one William de France ( Aka; The Picardy papers ) a quite unique (and very rare) insight into the mind of the medieval archer. In my articles I hope to draw upon these priceless and appalling ( to the modern mind ) facets of warfare as practised by these professional thugs. My erstwhile ancestor was at every major, ( and it seems, minor ) battle save one and contributed to many unrecorded actions that history in it's broadest sweep, does not record. Mr Nicholson and Mr Gilfrin have given their kind permission to use this material, seen here in Archers Review for the first time, for which I am eternally grateful.
